Safety Awareness Sept 25-Oct. 2

25 Sep

One of the goals of Safety Awareness Week is to teach and to practice safety procedures for emergency situations. At school, students and staff will be participating in a fire evacuation drill, a lockdown drill, and a hold and secure drill. On the day of one of these drills, students will be made aware in advance on the morning announcements. Here are some sites that have student-friendly information for younger students on safety http://www.sparky.org/parentpage/fpwkids.htm   http://elementarysafety.com/

It’s time to remind children about walking to school safely

This is a good time for parents to remind their children about pedestrian safety. York Regional Police has provided the following safety tips on their website to help keep students safe on their way to and from school:

  • Walk on available sidewalks
  • Always cross at intersections
  • Obey crossing guards
  • Stop before stepping into roadway
  • Be visible and indicate crossing intentions
  • Look and listen for traffic in all directions
  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • Cross safely when the roadway is clear
  • Walk. Do not run or cycle across roads
  • If possible use the buddy system

Terry Fox Walk Oct 2

25 Sep

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Terry Fox run. On Friday, October 2nd, students in grade K-8 at our school will be taking part in the Terry Fox National School Run.

Many people today have a connection to someone who has been impacted by cancer so the run can serve as a personal dedication to a friend or relative. Students can pick up a label from the office to wear on the day of the run to share who they are “walking for”.

If you would like to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation, please do so online www.terryfox.org

We are not collecting money at the school level so please do not send any money or cheques to school with your child. The foundation site is secure and receipts can be printed immediately upon completing your credit card donation. Simply click on the “Donate Now” tab in red and follow the prompts to make a school donation.

Students from kindergarten to Grade 3 will be walking around the school tarmac and students from Grade 4-8 will be walking around the school field. The student will be supervised by their teachers and EAs.

We a very pleased to be a part of the year’s Terry Fox Event as we encourage our students to develop volunteerism and goodwill, while celebrating school spirit. Thank you for support.
