SOME BROWNRIDGE DATES TO PUT IN YOUR CALENDAR…

Here are some upcoming dates to put in your calendar:

1. Our November School Council Meeting is now happening on Monday, November 12 at 6:30 in the library. All are welcome to attend.
2. Sunday, November 4th- At 2am, remember to turn your clocks back one hour
3. The “Every Student Counts” Survey will be available to complete on November 12. 
4. Progress Reports come home on November 21.
5. Parent/Teacher Interviews and Student Led Conferences are happening in the evening of November 22 and morning of November 23. Info will be available on EDSBY shortly.
6. November 23 is a PA Day. There is no school for students.
7. Parents of students in grades 7 and 8 are invited to participate in a workshop called “BrandED” on November 27 at 6:30 in the evening. This workshop focuses on understanding how your children are using social media to create an image of themselves, using their words and their actions…. and provides you with information about the impact of the choices your children make and how they can change things in a matter of minutes (Parents only- students will be participating in the workshop the next day).
8. Our next School Council event is Bingo Night. This beloved event is happening on Thursday, November 29 at 6:30pm. More info to follow.
9. The first ever Brownridge COMIC CON is happening on December 6. More info to follow!
10. Our Winter Concert is happening on Tuesday, December 11 at 6:30pm. More info to follow.

Brownridge PS- Info to know

Info to know:

1. Thank you to our #awesome School Council for putting on an amazing event last night. The Fall Ball was a huge success and a good time was had by all. Stay tuned for the next big event coming up at the end of November.
2. Do you want to get in touch with our School Council chairs? You can email them with questions and ideas at brownridge.ps@sc.yrdsb.ca
3. Our checkers club is up and running. Students in grades two and three organized a checkers club and it is being run by Coach Brennan. All students in grades two and three are welcome.
4. The weather is changing. Remember, students will be going outside in all temperatures (down to -20) and need to have appropriate clothing. If they are too sick to go outside they are too sick to come to school.
5. Parents of students in grade 8, please join us on Tuesday, October 30 for the Grade 8 Grad Trip Parent Information session happening at Brownridge at 6:30pm in the library.
6. HALLOWEEN: We acknowledge that not everyone celebrates Halloween and as such, costumes are not a requirement.  Students are welcome to wear their costumes if they would like, but orange and black, or regular clothing is also fine.  School and classes will continue as regular. If your children are wearing costumes on Wednesday, please do not send any real or replica weapons that may accompany the costume and please no masks that cover the entire face and/or head.  Please do not send food with students to share with their classes due to allergies and other food restrictions, we cannot share food.  In the days following Halloween, please ensure your kids’ snacks do not contain peanuts or tree nuts.

7. EDSBY- in the next two weeks you will be receiving information about Parent/Teacher interviews or Student-led conferences which are taking place in the evening of November 22 and morning of November 23. This is a good time to ensure you are registered for and have access to EDSBY. Need help? Call Ms. Sacke at 905-660-3083.

NEW! Pathways Planning and Course Selection Platform: Grades 7 – 12

The York Region District School Board will be providing your child with an engaging and new interactive online education and career/life planning platform starting in November 2018.  Career Cruising will not be available to students after November 15, 2018. Students will be notified via their GAPPS account email of the steps required to save information, that has been stored in their Individual Pathway Plan (IPP,) from Career Cruising into their GAPPS account.

This new platform  will include a number of beneficial resources to support your child as they progress from grade 7 to 12, including:

 

• Who Am I – 6 unique assessments for self-exploration and discovery (including Learning Styles, Myers-Briggs Personality, Holland Interests, Knowledge, Motivations, and Compatibility)

• High School – A tool to visually plan courses, track progress toward graduation, and instantly identify post-secondary eligibility for opportunities in all pathways

• Post-Secondary – A database to explore post-secondary opportunities and compare detailed information on apprenticeships, college programs, university programs and workplace sectors across Canada

• Goals – An interactive goal setting tool to set S.M.A.R.T. goals and action plans

• Occupations – A database of over 500 occupations to compare comprehensive information on jobs

• Resumes & Cover Letters – Interactive tools to record personal experiences, build resumes and write cover letters

• Money – An engaging budget-making tool to help students track income and expenses and develop financial literacy

• Job Search – A tool to explore real-world job postings that relate to occupations of interest

• Portfolios – A portfolio builder to create multiple portfolios and share it with parents, teachers, or future employers

 

Schools will be receiving more information regarding the transition to this new platform in the coming weeks and will continue to provide students and parents/guardians with updates.

Info to know at Brownridge…

Stay in the know:

 

1. Just a reminder to all that today, Monday October 22, 2018 is a P.A. Day and there is NO school.  Teachers will be engaged in learning together around key fundamentals in Math and explore strategies to support all students.  The office will be open from 11:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. if you need to contact us at the school.
2. Students in grades 1-8 will be participating in Comic Writing Workshops this Wednesday, October 24. Freeze DNA will be coming in to teach students and guide them through creating characters, a setting, a plot as well as how to design and create their own comic.
3. Grade 7 and 8 students will be attending the Kids4Kids Leadership and Anti-bullying conference on November 6 at the Meeting House in Oakville. Parents, please have your child at Brownridge for 8am so we get to the venue on time. Check out https://bit.ly/2RG4ADM for more information.
4. IT’S HERE! THIS THURSDAY…..OUR FIRST SCHOOL DANCE! IT IS GOING TO BE EPIC!!! Please join us on Thursday, October 25 for an evening of fun and engagement. Bounce Entertainment will be here from 6:30pm-8pm. Pizza and drinks will be sold beginning at 6pm. Thank you to school council for organizing.
5. Save the date: Parent-Teacher interviews/Student Led Conferences are happening in the evening of November 22 and in the morning of November 23. Sign up will be through EDSBY. Consider double checking that your account is up and running so you can sign up.

WESTMOUNT C.I.- GRADE 9 INFORMATION EVENING FOR GRADE 8 STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Purple Shirt Day- Thursday, October 18

Hey Brownridge…Purple Shirt Day is this week!  There are many organizations and causes that ask us to wear purple to show support (Alzheimer’s, Epilepsy, Children’s Aid Society – to name a few) but this week, wearing purple is in support of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Wear purple on Thursday, October 18 to show your support.

HALLOWEEN AT BROWNRIDGE AND BEYOND…

Halloween can be a very exciting time for children and adults. While there are many ways to celebrate, we must also be aware that not everyone celebrates Halloween and we must demonstrate equity and inclusivity in all we do. Please note the following when it comes to Halloween at Brownridge:

1. Costumes should be respectful of others. For example, if something is representative of a person’s culture or religious beliefs, then it should not be worn as another person’s costume.
2. Masks may only be worn if teachers allow time for a mask to be worn in class. They may not be worn at any other time (ie. recess, lunch)
3. Students may not bring weapons or replica weapons to school.
4. Students will be engaged in curriculum related activities throughout the day; some of which may be connected to Halloween. 

Safety: For families who go trick or treating, here are a few safety tips:

1. Cross at street lights or stop signs. 
2. Carry a flashlight or a lit up object so kids/adults can be seen at night in the dark.
3. Kids should go with parents/guardians and/or in groups.
4. Never run across the street. Look both ways before you walk.
5. Only knock on doors of houses with lights on.

Health: A few tips

1. Brush your teeth after consuming sweet treats. It helps reduce plaque and tartar build up. 
2. Limit quantity of treats each day following Halloween.
3. Limit quantity of treats on the night of Halloween.

Be In The Know At Brownridge…

Info to know:

1. Students who ride their bikes to school must be wearing a bicycle helmet. We have noticed a number of students riding without helmets and are concerned about potential head injuries in the event they have a fall or an accident. Let’s practice safe biking….wear a helmet. 
2. Ms. Tenenbaum is searching for some volunteers to help out in the library once or twice a week for a couple of hours. Please consider donating your time to help the library run even more smoothly. If you are interested, please email brownridge.ps@yrdsb.ca to let us know. 
3. Our students did fabulous at Cross Country Areas this week. They ran with all their might and made Brownridge proud. Well done to our students for their sportsmanship and dedication. Thank you to Ms. Large and Ms. Matijevic for coaching our students.
4. Our students participated in a presentation this week called Vision Tribal Dance- Turtle Island. They learned about First Nations’ culture, dances and stereotypes. Students were engaged with the music, the dance and the learning. Thank you to school council for funding this learning experience. 
5. Coach Hinds and Coach Suh are preparing our intermediate boys and girls teams to participate in volleyball tournaments and build their skills in this awesome sport. Well done to everyone who is participating.
6. Just a heads up: Monday, October 22 is a PA Day.
7. SAVE THE DATE: Our first dance is taking place on Thursday, October 25. Pizza is available at 6pm onwards and the dancing starts at 6:30. Bounce Entertainment will be here to fill the gym with music and fun!
8. Our next school council meeting is on November 5 at 6:30. Everyone is welcome!
