Winter Hot Lunches – On sale beginning December 3

Hello Parents/Guardians,

We are super excited to let you know that the opportunity to order Hot Lunches for the Winter session (January to March) is here. Ordering for Winter hot lunches will be opening in School Cash Online on Monday December 3.  Thank you to School Council for organizing and coordinating.

The School Council has set Mondays up a bit differently this session.  Instead of rotating chicken fingers, pasta and subs on Mondays, families are able to choose between chicken fingers, pasta and/or salad every Monday that hot lunches are offered.

School Council is also partnering with Kids’ Kitchen and these meals will be offered on Wednesdays.  Attached is their flyers for your review.  Kids’ Kitchen will also be providing the school with hard copy flyers that will be sent out with every student sometime next week.  Parents will be able to order Wednesday hot lunches by setting up an account directly with kids kitchen.

There are no changes to pizza lunches on Fridays – they will still be offered through School Cash Online.

Some Math News From Brownridge…

Winter Math

Winter break is right around the corner! This is a great opportunity to take time with your child and connect math to the real world. Below are some ideas that will help get you started:

• Grocery shopping can involve money, budgeting, estimating, adding, subtracting, and measuring
• Cooking can involve weighing, measuring, ordering, estimating, adding, and multiplying
• Organizing for a party can mean matching numbers of people to plates, cutlery, area of tables, ordering food, and seating arrangements
• Going on a trip by car or plane involves time, distance, budgeting, speed, comparing various routes, and shape scavenger hunts
• Completing a half finished symmetrical design using playdough (e.g., half a butterfly, tree)
• Building a snowperson can involve measuring, spatial reasoning, and estimating

These ideas will help your child see the importance of math in their everyday lives through fun and interactive ways.

DECEMBER IS ALMOST HERE- LET’S BE HEALTHY AND ACTIVE!

December is an Exciting Time of Year! The first day of winter falls in December! Start of School Winter holidays! Spending time with Family and Friends!

December is also a great time to get outside, have fun in the snow and discover the great outdoors! .

When the temperature drops, it is common for many parents to want their kids to spend time indoors. However, there are many benefits for kids to be active outside in the winter, including:

-Building different muscle groups and improving physical health

-Engaging in creative play

-Being messy and having fun

-Fresh air and sunlight

-Learning first-hand about nature, the weather and the seasons

-When children are outside they move more, sit less, play longer and sleep more soundly at night. Being active also helps to improve your self-esteem, social skills and mental health. Here are some December challenges we invite your children to try leading up to the holidays (December 3rd to 21st):

-Walk to and from school or the bus stop everyday

-Wish the crossing guard or a classmate on your walk to school a great day

-On your walk to school make a snow angel

-On your walk to school complete 10 star jumps and 10 jumping jacks

-Make someone laugh today

-Check your local recreation center for fun activities that you and your family can do over the holidays

-Say something positive to one of your classmates

-Active School Travel is a simple way to fit physical activity into your daily routine!

-If you live far, consider parking a block away and walking. If active school travel every day is a challenge, choose one, two or three times a week to make a change.

Info to know:

1. Looking forward to seeing you tonight at 6pm for Bingo Night at Brownridge. We are asking all families to bring some non-perishable food items or new toys/clothes to support our Holiday Heroes Campaign. 
2. Tomorrow is the last day to complete the “Every Student Counts Survey”. We hope everyone will take a few minutes to complete the survey. (Students in grades 7 and 8 completed it at school.)
3. The Brownridge Comic Con is next Thursday. We are hoping you will be able to join us to celebrate the work we have been doing.
4. Next week you will be receiving information about ordering HOT LUNCHES for January to March . Exciting news……there will be a new hot lunch option available on Wednesdays!

Parking lot safety at Brownridge- Safety Over Convenience…

Dear Brownridge Families,

There is continued concern about parking lot safety at Brownridge PS. As you know, at the November School Council Meeting, there were issues raised about the speed at which cars are being driven in the parking lot, the location at which students are being dropped off, the blocking in of parked vehicles and the parking of cars in the middle of the parking lot so parents can walk their students into the school. Based on the dialogue and concern for student safety, we are asking the following:

Please slow down. Safety over convenience at all times.

1. Please park on the road or in a parking spot if you are walking your child on to school property. DO NOT park in areas which stop the flow of traffic and block cars in.
2. Please note:  The bus loop/Emergency Lane is off limits to cars between 8:25-8:40 as this interferes with bus drop off and cars are not allowed to pass the buses.  Please drop your child off at the sidewalk near the entrance to the parking lot at the west end of the school and then drive through the parking lot once your child is dropped off. Do not stop for extended periods of time and do not park in the middle of the parking lot.
3. Do not enter through the exit as this is one-way and an accident waiting to happen.
4. The handicap parking spot near the YMCA daycare is only to be used by those who have a permit to do so.
5. Consider walking to school.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.  Unfortunately if these guidelines are not followed we will have to close the parking lot between 8:25 and 8:40 each morning in order to keep our children safe.

3. Tomorrow we are hosting a parent workshop for parents of students in grades 7 and 8 called “Branded”. This is a great way to support your child in making decisions that impact student choice and voice, navigate the use of social media when determining how to best brand themselves, and being a partner with your child to persevere as they journey through high school and post-secondary education. (Students will be attending a session similar to this). The presentation is taking place on Tuesday, November 27 at 7pm in the library. Please register here to join us for this amazing opportunity.

Be in the know at Brownridge…

Five things you need to know about next week:

1. We hope parents/guardians of students in grades 7 and 8 will join us for the BrandED presentation happening on Tuesday, November 27 at 7pm in the library. Here is the link to register  (Check out the flyer below- students will participate in the presentation the next day).
2. Join on us on Thursday, November 29th for an awesome evening of BINGO! Please see the flyer below for details.
3. Our Holiday Heroes Campaign is on. We are asking you to consider donating new toys, new clothing and non-perishable food items to support those in need. We have boxes in the front foyer where these items can be placed. Thank you for making a difference within our community. Click here for more information. 
4. The Junior Volleyball tryouts for students in grades 4, 5 and 6 are taking place on Tuesday and Thursday at 3pm next week. 
5. We are recognizing the character trait of Fairness at the Character Assembly on Monday at 9:15am. Thank you to the Student Voice Club for organizing and coordinating the assembly.

‘It’s the season…although it is always the season to share kindness with our neighbors, community and beyond…this time of year is always an opportunity to help others in need if we are able.

2. Sign up for parent-teacher interviews/student led conferencing taking place on Thursday, Nov 22 and Fri Nov 23 continues until the evening of November 21. Please go to EDSBY to book. 
3. Join us for BINGO night on Thursday, November 29 at 6pm.
4. Progress Reports come home on Wednesday, November 21. They are an indication of how your child is doing in relation to achieving the curriculum expectations by the end of term one. This is a great time to consider goal setting and developing a plan to achieve that goal. 
5. Shortly our students will be participating in the Forest of Reading program. We are enrolled in The Blue Spruce, Silver Birch and Red Maple fiction and non-fiction groups. To check out the titles students will be reading go to
