A Message from Public Health

22 Feb

Student absences have increased recently within several schools in York Region, related to illnesses with respiratory and enteric symptoms.

To protect staff, students and families from getting ill, remember to:

  • Stay at home when you are sick, and keep your child home if they are sick
  • Keep healthy by eating healthy foods, being physically active and ensuring your immunizations are up-to-date, including the seasonal flu shot
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available
  • Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue, not your hand, and throw away used tissues immediately
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Clean and disinfect common surfaces

Symptoms of respiratory and/or enteric illness can include:

  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fever (over 38 degrees Celsius or 100 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Muscle aches and fatigue
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If you or your child are sick and do not improve, contact your health care provider.

Many viruses are commonly active at this time of year, for example norovirus and influenza (flu). Both viruses are very contagious and can be spread by contact with contaminated surfaces, such as door knobs or eating utensils. For more information, read the norovirus and flu fact sheets online at the following links:

Student Safety

17 Feb

We would like to ask that parents dropping off their children in the morning, please use the kiss and ride loop. We realize that patience may be needed as the buses are waiting or being unloaded but our concern is for safety of all children. Another option, is to park your car on the road and walk your child(ren) into the school yard. Please do not drop off your child in the parking lot and expect them to navigate on their own through the lot and crossing the bus loop. As a piece of information, a recent article through Sick Kids suggests that  Dangerous driving when dropping children off at schools may put kids at increased risk of getting injured in the vicinity of their schools.

We greatly appreciate your support in keeping all of our students safe.

Weather Alerts and Indoor Recess – Reminder

12 Feb

11JAN

Please know that we monitor the weather (Weather Network – Thornhill) on a daily/hourly basis in regards to students going outdoors for recess. We do take into account the wind chill factor. When the weather is minus 20 degrees and colder, students remain inside for recess.

It is important you send your child appropriately dressed for the winter weather when the temperature allows for outdoor recess.  We are seeing many children who are not wearing hats, gloves/mitts, scarves, boots and/or snow pants in addition to their winter jackets.  Please remind your children the importance of wearing these items while they are outside.

National Sweater Day Feb. 4

2 Feb

On February 4, 2016 Brownridge will be recognizing National Sweater Day. National Sweater Day is a day when we turn down the heat by 2° to promote saving energy. We are asking students and staff to bring an extra sweater on Thursday to keep warm. The temperature of the school is usually 21°, but we are turning the thermostat down to 19°. We would encourage families to take part at home by turning their own furnace by 2°. We hope many students and staff will take part in this day to help save energy.
